Description

Asclepias incarnata is a striking, medium-tall plant with narrow, elongated leaves on branching stems. It typically grows to a height of 4', but can reach 6' under ideal conditions. It has large terminal clusters of fragrant, deep-pink flowers. In fall, the flowers give way to 5" long, attractive, brown pods that eventually burst open releasing their tufted seeds to be carried by the wind.

Cultivation

This milkweed is native to just about all of north America east of the Rockies. Although a swamp plant, it will withstand dry spells once established and is a good choice for rain gardens. It is tolerant of a wide variety of soils from well drained to mucky, and even heavy clay. Excellent around water features in full sun. It may bloom as early as June in the southern part of its range, and as late as August in the north. Zones 3-10

Additional Notes

Long used for its medicinal value, all parts of the swamp milkweed may be toxic in large quantities. Both flowers and seeds are edible, as well as the plant and young shoots when cooked. It is a larval host for the monarch and queen butterflies. Susceptible to aphids. An underutilized plant ideal for wetlands.
