Description

At up to 4' in height, Monarda fistulosa is a tall member of the Mint family. The stems are typically square and hairy, the leaves are oblong and fragrant. It produces an abundance of large, fragrant, lavender, pompom-like flowers.

Cultivation

Wild bergamot is very easy to grow in any type of soil, and in full sun to part shade. Established plants are fairly drought resistant and can also tolerate wet winter conditions. Good air circulation is important in poorly-drained, wetter and more humid environments, in order to reduce its susceptibility to powdery mildew. As with many other members of the Mint family, it can spread rather aggressively by rhizomes, as well as from seed. The stems should be pinched a few times early in their growth, to encourage branching, a denser form, and abundant flower production. Plants enjoy a long blooming period beginning in mid-summer and lasting about a month. It can be further extended by deadheading spent flowers. Dividing the clumps every 2 to 3 years will keep the plants healthy and help control their spread. Zones 2-8

Additional Notes

A good choice for cottage gardens and perennial flower borders. Flowering stems can be used in cut-flower arrangements. The fragrant leaves have commonly been brewed in herbal teas. They also have a long history of medicinal applications, including treatments for respiratory and intestinal ailments, headaches and even acne.
