Description
You will simply fall in love with the delicate appearance of Chelone glabra as the intense heat of the summer starts to wind down. The softness of the white flowers, tinged with a blush of pink, pop out again the dark green leaves. The plant has a vertical habit, with deep-green, opposite, oval toothed leaves that are between 6-9” long. It produces smooth, four-sided stems that terminates in dense flowering spikes, bringing the plant's height up to 4'. The flowers are tubular, bright white with some hints of pink/purple, and up to 1-1 ½” long. You will enjoy this species’ long blooming period that can occur from late summer to early fall and lasts about 2 months.

Cultivation
Chelone glabra is very adaptable, with the only requirement being that the soil not dry out for extended periods. It does best in part-shade where it gets exposed to as little as 2 hours of direct sun per day. Just keep in mind that the more sun it is exposed to, the higher its water needs will be. It can tolerate very wet conditions, as long as the soil is well drained. Sensitive to pollution and disturbances, this plant is a great indicator of a thriving environment. Great around water features and in rain gardens, white turtlehead can also be a showy addition to perennial gardens and woodland borders. Zones 4-8.
Additional Notes
Chelone glabra is attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. It is moderately deer resistant.
