What You'll Receive:
One (1) Yarrow starter plug - a young, healthy plant with an established root system, ready to thrive in poor soils and attract beneficial insects for years to come.
The legendary healing herb of ancient warriors! Yarrow gets its botanical name from the Greek hero Achilles, who allegedly used this plant to treat battlefield wounds during the Trojan War. This extremely tough New England native features flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers above feathery, fern-like foliage that's aromatic when crushed. One of the most versatile and adaptable natives, it thrives in poor soils, tolerates drought, spreads to fill bare areas, and attracts beneficial insects all season long. Both ornamental and functional!
Outstanding Features:
Legendary Medicinal Plant: Used for thousands of years to stop bleeding and heal wounds. Native Americans valued it as a 'life medicine' for treating various ailments.
Extreme Adaptability: Grows in poor soils, tolerates drought, heat, salt, and various pH levels. One of the toughest native perennials available!
Pollinator & Beneficial Insect Magnet: Attracts butterflies, native bees, and beneficial predatory insects that help control garden pests.
Long Blooming: Flowers from early summer through fall (June-October) when deadheaded, providing months of nectar.
Lawn Alternative: Spreads by rhizomes to create a low-maintenance groundcover that can even be mowed. Stays green during drought when lawns turn brown!
Plant Specifications:
Light: Full sun to partial shade (4-8 hours)
Soil: Average to poor, well-drained; tolerates clay, sand, rocky soil Moisture: Dry to medium; very drought tolerant once established Height: 1-3 feet tall, 2-3 feet spread (spreads by rhizomes) Bloom Time: June to October (summer through fall)
Hardiness: Zones 3-9 (perfect for all of New England)
Growing Tips:
Plant starter plugs 18-24 inches apart in spring or fall. Yarrow is nearly indestructible once established! It prefers well-drained soil and full sun but adapts to various conditions. Spreads by rhizomes and self-seeding—can be invasive in ideal conditions, so plant where spreading is acceptable or contain with edging. Deadhead to prolong blooming and minimize self-seeding. Can be mowed as a lawn alternative in low-traffic areas. Divide clumps every 3-4 years. In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, this is an excellent choice for difficult sites, meadows, prairie gardens, and as a durable groundcover. Note: All parts of the plant are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested. Can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep away from pets and livestock.
